FAQ's

Tenerife is a fantastic place to go to get away from the winter blues as it is over 20°C nearly every day and it boasts a cycling training pedigree as it is the area where Sir Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and the SKY team practice, it is where they go to train for their Tour De France wins. For more details on Tenerife, riding in Tenerife and even a sneaky section about us, click here to look at an article from Cycling Weekly. You can also see the article from Total Women's Cycling where they name us in the Top 8 Training Camps in the world. If you have any further questions about Tenerife or training here, you can go to FAQ's by scrolling to the bottom of this page or call us on 01869 278130.

Polka Dot Cycling is dedicated to giving its customers the best quality and value; which means we dedicate our time and effort to using the best routes, having the best guides and giving each customer a personal experience allowing them access to coaching and expertise, unlike any other. Have a look at what our customers thought of our Camps in 2016!

We use a training block over 6 days to show you how to develop your fitness and form. We are now running the option of  2-3 riding groups (depending on numbers) to accommodate varying abilities and training goals. Each group will be 10-12 poeple.  This means we can distribute the guides among the clients so that everyone is given the attention and help that they need. These groups are generally classed as Speedy Advanced, Training and Leisure. This combined with the option of 2 different rides on selected days, the standard routes we all know and love with the option to extend the ride, gives everyone enough of a challenge and the opportunity to take it at their own pace.

We will be running with 4-6 guides on each trip ( depending on numbers) keeping our Guide to Client ratio at 1:6 so that there is always someone on hand to give you some advice, encouragement or help

These are the training days we offer on our Endurance Training Camps. Please be aware that it is very hilly in Tenerife so we measure our days in hours, not in mileage:

  • Day 1 "Let's Start to Ride" - 3-3.5 hours std route, 3.5-4 hours on optional route at a slightly faster pace.
  • Day 2 "Building Form" - 3.5 hours std route, 5-6 hours on optional route at a slightly faster pace.
  • Day 3 "Building Some MORE Form" - 3-4 hours steady ride on std route, 3.5-4.5 hours on optional route.
  • Day 4 "The BIG Day" - 5-7 hours long ride to Mount Teide - today we ride the longest continuous climb in Europe. There are 2 options today; the first is 2600m of climbing and the second 3100m of climbing.
  • Day 5 "Bringing it Back Down" - 2-2.5 hours active recovery on std route, 3-3.5 hours on optional route.
  • Day 6 "Practice Makes Perfect - Test Your Legs!" - 3 hour ride.

On the 9 Day Training Camp week we have 7 days of riding and the runs from Saturday to Sunday. Again there will be a choice of rides but there will also be an opportunity to work on improving your speed as well as working on your endurance for the week.

  • Day 1 "Speed Session or Endurance day” - 3-3.5 hours route either at a constant pace or with intervals.
  • Day 2 "Building Form" – 3-3.5 hours std route, 3.5-4 hours on optional route at a slightly faster pace.
  • Day 3 "First Big Day" - 3-4 hours steady ride on std route, 5-6 hours on optional route.
  • Day 4 "Recovery Day" - 5-7 hours long ride to Mount Teide - today we ride the longest continuous climb in Europe. There are 2 options today; the first is 2600m of climbing and the second 3100m of climbing.
  • Day 5 "Speed Session or Endurance day” - 3-3.5 hours route either at a constant pace or with intervals.
  • Day 6 "Building Form" – 3-3.5 hours std route, 3.5-4 hours on optional route at a slightly faster pace.
  • Day 7 "Second Big Day" - 5-7 hours long ride to Mount Teide - today we ride the longest continuous climb in Europe. There are 2 options today; the first is 2600m of climbing and the second 3100m of climbing.

Tenerife does not have ANY flat roads, you will be climbing or descending constantly and so a certain level is required to ride here. Please see FAQs if you are concerned about whether you are fit enough.

We make sure that ALL our weeks in Tenerife are fully coached to give everyone the best level of advice and attention. This is being coupled with One to One Sessions, which will be scheduled on selected days, to give any riders an opportunity to discuss their goals for the coming season and how to prepare for them.

We have also decided to run additional seminars. Every evening you can choose from;

  • Improve your Climbing and Descending Technique - including video analysis
  • Training Using Power
  • Power Data Analysis
  • Eat Right, Recover Better
  • How to Put Together a Training Programme
  • Improve Your Road Racing
  • How to Prepare for and Ride the Ultimate Sportif!
  • Preparing for the Raid Alpine OR Haute Route - Week-Long Events
  • Set That TT PB!
  • Group Riding Skills

If you wish to hire a high quality bike instead of the hassle of bringing your one from home, we can arrange this also. Please Click Here for more details.

 FAQs ABOUT TRAINING IN TENERIFE

Below are some of the most common questions we get asked about our training weeks:

  • WHY TRAIN OR RIDE IN TENERIFE?
  • WHAT ABILITIES DO WE CATER FOR?
  • WILL I GET ADVICE OFF THE BIKE TOO?
  • WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?
  • WANT TO BRING YOUR FAMILY/PARTNER TOO?
  • AM I FIT ENOUGH TO RIDE ONE ON YOUR TRIPS?

WHY TRAIN OR RIDE IN TENERIFE?

The Pros Choice:

Cycling Tenerife used to be the pro-cyclists great training secret, but since Sir Bradley Wiggins and the SKY team openly stated they started training here in 2012 in preparation for the Tour, it has become the 'New Majorca' for cycle training & holidays alike. In 2013 as well as SKY; Astana, Katousha, Orica GreenEdge, Rabobank & Cannondale have all held training camps here and in the past other big teams such as; Liquigas and Cervelo have trained here too.  Now even UK pro teams such as Rapha Racing are flocking to the island.

See more about why Bradley Wiggins believes training in Tenerife made such a difference to his 2012 Tour de France. > Telegraph Article

Weather:

Known as the "Island of Eternal Spring", with year round temperatures of 20°C+, (even in January, February, March & April!), Tenerife is a perfect place to ensure you actually have a warm weather training camp.  Rainfall is very low with only 4 days of rain between November and the end of March in 2013 and nearly every day you will feel the sun on your back, Unlike some of the other Canary Islands, Tenerife is also sheltered from the wind.

Terrain:

Take a look at our latest video of climbing and descending Mount Teide on our YouTube channel. Ascent and Descent of Mount Teide Video > (This video was kindly produced by Nerys Evans, professional producer and filming by Sebastian de Meza.  Thank you both for your help and support on this.)

The terrain in Tenerife is undulating and mountainous (climbs to well over 2000m), with the longest continous climb in Europe up to Mount Teide and this is why even the SKY classics guys have been training here in 2013 as this type of training gives you a massive improvement in strength as well as over all fitness.

Tenerife is also not just barren volcanic rock, with seven different vegetation zones, inlcuding pine forested climbs and spectacular views, it really is a perfect training location or simply a great place for a cycling holiday. For more information on Tenerife, go to> The Tenerife Information Centre.

For more pictures of the terrain, the roads and cycling Tenerife, see the Telegraph picture gallery of Bradley and the SKY team in action. > Click here

WHAT ABILITIES DO WE CATER FOR?

Although there is a lot of climbing here, we are still very able to cater for a wide range of abilities.  We do this by allowing everyone to ride at their own pace up the climbs and re-group at the top.  You will never be made to feel that you are holding up the group as those that are first always have the option to descend and repeat part of the climb.  We regularly have people that are training for sportives, triathlons, time trials and road racing as well people looking to simply ride in the sun and this mix has never caused a problem.  However if you do have any concerns, please do feel you can give us a call to have a chat about your individual circumstances.

WHICH HOTEL ?

We have  partnered with the 4* Costa Adeje Palace  hotel for several years  now and they really know how to look after you. We personally selected  it because it is high quality, it offers the right location, accommodation upgrade options and great  food for you  so you  get the most out of the  whole experience.

WILL I GET ADVICE OFF THE BIKE TOO?

Every evening we run an optional informal seminar on various training topics as well as advice on pacing, gearing, nutrition and descending skills etc. We then help you put this into practice on the road over the following days, inc. video analysis of descending and climbing.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

The  hotel we use is ideal for partners/families and are located in a lovely quiet, refurbished old fishing village, La Caleta on the West coast.  La Caleta is away from big resort area, yet only a 10 minute transfer if you want to go and explore.  It's also renowned for it's sports training, with top professional sportsman (particularly triathletes, swimmers, rugby and football players) training at the 'Tenerife Top Training' centre. We have had several triathletes use their facillities including the sim flume whilst on one of our trainng weeks. Our clients have said that they 'love the location and it's a perfect balance for families or partners to accompany them and easy access to the cycling routes'. Please see the  hotel choices above.

WANT TO BRING YOUR FAMILY/PARTNER?

No problem! We welcome families and partners too.  We recognise that for most people, holiday time is precious and so being able to combine a weeks training with a family holiday is a must.  On most days the cyclists will be back back to the hotel around lunch time so there will be time to spend the afternoons together.  We have separate prices for both cyclists and non-cyclists (including special childrens prices).  We also give you an information pack with some ideas of things you might like to do in the area as well.

AM I FIT ENOUGH TO RIDE ON ONE OF YOUR TRIPS?

Tenerife really has no flat roads, this is why the pro riders come here to train. Therefore every day you will be constantly climbing or descending, you will require a reasonable level of fitness before you come to handle 6 consecutive days of riding on this terrain. If you have any concerns regarding your health please contact your physician, if you wish to talk to us about this issue please call us on 01869 278130. If you are struggling to handle the riding here we will encourage you to make use of the minibus, that is what it is for. We reserve the right to make alterations to the route if we have concerns regarding your health, safety and fatigue levels. During the week we are intending for you to build some form, not go home in a heap!
